Despite a 2002 trade ban under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, pangolins are the most-trafficked mammal on the illegal wildlife black market. They are smuggled live or slaughtered and frozen, often hidden amid other cargo with falsified customs declarations.

ProFauna Indonesia, a wildlife protection organization in Indonesia, surveyed and found out that the illegal wildlife trade in the country in 2009 remained high. ProFauna suggests that the government should take this crime seriously and put it as a national issue. However, ProFauna applaudes the authorities in East Java, Bali, and Jakarta who have enforced the wildlife law and saved more than a million USD (10 billions IDR) as well as detered the criminals.
